My partner and I are driving back to the Cape.
Living on the island means getting home requires a ferry or a flight.
We chose the ferry, the last one of that Tuesday.
I bought the Captain’s View tickets for the extra six bucks. That way we know where we sit when we get on the boat and we can have privacy. I still am unsure about looking people in the eyes right now.
The procedure happened that morning. Every person involved was so kind and compassionate regarding what I was about to go through. The room we waited in had a television that played any music you wanted. I asked for the sounds of meditation and the place started to transform. Once we turned off the overhead lights in this room with no windows so it was lit only from a few computers and monitors, the atmosphere immediately became calmer. I lay down on the bed, my partner by my side. We held hands.
The waiting game.
Hospitals are known for that: hurry up and wait, hurry up and wait. They are the other airports, and I was about to take a trip and, in some ways, drop off some baggage and come back.
